A field of 103 golfers turned out for the Kericho leg of the Road to Somabay Golf Series, producing a fiercely contested tournament that highlighted the depth of amateur golf talent emerging across Kenya.
Played on the challenging fairways of Kericho Golf Club, the event attracted competitors from across the region, all seeking qualification spots to the Road to Somabay Grand Finale. Sponsored by CIB Bank and MichezoNet, the series continues to provide amateur golfers with a pathway to compete for an international golfing experience at Somabay in Egypt.
The day's top honours went to Picoty Koskei, who amassed an impressive 44 Stableford points to emerge as Overall Winner. Koskei edged a competitive field through consistent scoring and effective use of handicap strokes, finishing two points clear of Edmond Samoei, who secured the Overall Runner-Up position with 42 points.
While Koskei claimed the overall title, the strongest gross performance among the leading qualifiers came from Division One winner Adrian Monari. Monari posted a gross score of 87 while returning 36 Stableford points to top his division. His round was built on remarkable consistency, recording seven pars and seven bogeys while limiting costly mistakes across the 18 holes.
Monari's inward nine proved decisive as he improved from an outward score of 45 to a closing 42, demonstrating composure and strong course management when the pressure intensified. He narrowly held off Parminder Hunjan, who finished runner-up in Division One on 35 points.
In Division Two, Patrick Cheruiyot delivered a commanding performance to claim victory with 39 points, while Elijah Rono finished a close second on 38 points. The category once again illustrated the competitive depth within Kenya's amateur golfing ranks, with only a handful of points separating the leading contenders.
The Gross Winner title was deservedly claimed by Ignatius Ngetich after returning an outstanding gross score of 79. Ngetich's round represented the finest stroke-play performance of the tournament and underlined the quality of golf on display throughout the day.
One of the most notable aspects of the competition was the contrasting routes taken by the winners. While Ngetich dominated the gross category through superior ball-striking, Koskei secured the overall Stableford title through disciplined scoring and consistency. The outcome reinforced the unique appeal of handicap competition, where strategic golf and effective scoring can be as valuable as outright power and precision.
The scorecards also revealed the demanding nature of the Kericho Golf Club layout. Few players managed birdie-filled rounds, with success instead being determined by minimizing costly mistakes and capitalizing on scoring opportunities. Many of the leading competitors improved on the inward nine, highlighting the importance of patience and course management on a layout that rewards disciplined play.
At the conclusion of the event, five golfers secured qualification to the Road to Somabay Grand Finale. Picoty Koskei, Edmond Samoei, Adrian Monaria and Patrick Cheruiyot will now join qualifiers from across the country in the battle for the ultimate prize.
The strong turnout in Kericho further demonstrated the growing popularity of the Road to Somabay Series and the increasing appetite for competitive amateur golf across Kenya. With several qualifying events still to be played, competition for places in the Grand Finale is expected to intensify as golfers continue their pursuit of a coveted place at one of the region's most exciting amateur golf showcases.
