Day One delivers dominant starts, dramatic swings and early warning signs as 15 clubs battle for five divisional titles, promotion and survival
MUTHAIGA, NAIROBI — The 2026 Patron’s Cup has begun with the defending champions making the strongest statement of the opening day, but Friday’s results have also revealed that the battles below the Trophy Division could be every bit as compelling.
Following Friday’s 4BBB and Foursomes, Muthaiga Golf Club lead the Trophy Division with 41 points, while Sigona, Golf Park, Windsor and Ruiru occupy the top positions in the Shield, Plaque, Bowl and Mug respectively.
But the numbers only tell part of the story.
Muthaiga were dominant. Sigona produced the strongest Foursomes performance in the Shield. Kiambu recovered spectacularly from a scoreless morning. Royal went in the opposite direction, collapsing from 17.5 points in 4BBB to just three in Foursomes. Windsor showed why they arrived in the Bowl with promotion ambitions, while new entrants Kericho discovered just how demanding the Patron’s Cup can be.
With another 4BBB and Foursomes programme on Saturday before Sunday's Singles, the opening day has provided important clues — but few conclusions.
TROPHY DIVISION
Muthaiga Golf Club —Muthaiga could hardly have made a stronger start to their defence.The four-time champions swept their opening 4BBB matches, collecting 20 points, before adding another 21 points in Foursomes.The morning already contained several emphatic results. Bo Ciera and Daniel Kiragu defeated Railway's Morgan Chirchir and Onassis Ndegwa 5/4, while Bhavnish and Neer Chandaria defeated Vet Lab's Ebill Omollo and James Mugo 5/4. Jay Sandhu and Quram Bhatti then produced a 6/4 win over Vet Lab's Mikael Kihara and Chrisphine Owuor.
Muthaiga carried that momentum into the afternoon. Jay Sandhu and Quram Bhatti won 4/3, Greg Snow and Khushil Nathwani won 2 up, Bo Ciera and Daniel Kiragu won 5/4, while Kavit Bhakoo and Ronan Patel won 3/2.
The only interruption came when one Muthaiga pairing was unable to convert its afternoon contest, but the overall picture was emphatic.
The performance is consistent with the depth that delivered Muthaiga's 129-point championship in 2025.
Assessment:Muthaiga have not simply taken the early lead. They have immediately established a sizeable cushion and demonstrated strength in both formats. The defending champions look organised, deep and comfortable.
Day 1 verdict: Outstanding — the benchmark remains firmly in place.
Vet Lab Sports Club — A credible start, but already chasing
Vet Lab entered the Trophy with significant expectations after their extraordinary 114.5-point Shield-winning campaign in 2025.Friday was respectable rather than spectacular.
They collected 10 points in the morning, including a 2/1 win over Railway by Wasim Ali and Kushagra Sharma, before improving to 13.5 in Foursomes.Their afternoon was more competitive. Wasim Ali and Krish Shah defeated Railway's Isaac Makokha and Phelex Cheruiyot 5/4, while Lee Njoroge and Ebill Omollo shared their contest with Railway's second pair. Jean D'Amour and Manav Shah also beat Railway's fourth pair 7/5.
The problem is that much of Vet Lab's good work came against Railway rather than the defending champions.
Vet Lab have shown they belong in the Trophy, but Muthaiga have already opened a 17.5-point gap. Their Saturday morning must be significantly stronger if their promotion is to become a genuine title challenge.
Day 1 verdict: Solid — but the chase is already on.
Kenya Railway Golf Club — A morning to forget
Railway endured the toughest opening in the Trophy.
They failed to score in the morning 4BBB, losing all four contests.Their afternoon response was better. William Moturi and Jonathan Ndu'ngu defeated Vet Lab's fourth pair 4/3, while their second Foursomes pairing shared its match with Vet Lab.
But the morning damage was severe.Railway finished second in the Trophy in 2025, but Friday's performance leaves them with a significant mountain to climb.
Railway need an immediate turnaround. Their Foursomes recovery shows that the team has not collapsed, but another poor session on Saturday could effectively end their hopes of challenging for the Trophy.
Day 1 verdict: Major setback ,recovery required.
SHIELD DIVISION
Sigona Golf Club — The strongest statement outside the Trophy
Sigona produced arguably the strongest Day One performance outside the Trophy.
After taking 15 points in 4BBB, they exploded in Foursomes with 22.5 points, finishing the day on 37.5.
The afternoon showed considerable depth. Sigona's pairings produced wins over Nyali and Thika across several matches, including a 5/4 victory by Mohit Mediratta and Deep Shah over Thika's third pair and a 5/4 win by Junaid Manji and Hetansh Shah against Nyali.This is significant because Sigona finished second in the Shield in 2025. Friday suggests they may have learned from the late-round fade that cost them the division last year.Sigona have combined a strong morning with an outstanding afternoon. They now have a 12.5-point lead over Thika and look like the early promotion favourites.
Day 1 verdict: Excellent - early promotion favourites.
Thika Sports Club — Still firmly in the race
Thika, promoted after winning the 2025 Plaque Division, have made a respectable start to life in the Shield.
They collected 10 points in 4BBB before improving to 15 in Foursomes.Their afternoon included a 4/3 victory by Simon Ndungu and Paul Nduati against Nyali, while Samuel Njoroge and Gicheru Mwathi also won their contest against Nyali's third pair.Thika's 2025 campaign was characterised by resilience. They opened that tournament with only 2.5 points but recovered to win the Plaque.
The 12.5-point deficit to Sigona is manageable. Thika need to improve their 4BBB output on Saturday, but their Foursomes performance suggests they remain firmly in the promotion race.
Day 1 verdict: Competitive and still within striking distance
Nyali Golf & Country Club — Redemption has not started as planned
Nyali arrived in the Shield after relegation from the Trophy, with an immediate return expected to be the objective.
Friday, however, was difficult.They collected just five points in 4BBB and 7.5 in Foursomes.
There were individual positives. Daniel Nduva and George Munyao defeated Sigona's third pair 3/2, while Adel Balala and Zayan Din shared their second match with Sigona.But Nyali were unable to convert those moments into a strong team score.
The 25-point gap to Sigona is significant. Nyali's 2025 Trophy campaign showed that they possess quality, but Friday indicates that they need to find consistency quickly.
Day 1 verdict: Under pressure , redemption delayed.
PLAQUE DIVISION
Golf Park Golf Club — A balanced opening
Golf Park have taken the early lead in what could become one of the most competitive divisions.
They combined a solid 12.5-point 4BBB session with 18 in Foursomes.
Their afternoon was particularly strong. James Mwangi and Geoffrey Waweru won 4/3, while Amos Odongo and Robert Odero won 1 up. David Wakhu and Silvester Ettan added a 2-up victory, and James Mwangi and Collins Minute won 4/3.That is a significant response from a team that missed promotion by only 0.5 points in 2025.
Golf Park have started with the most balanced performance in the division and currently have the advantage. But the gap to Kiambu and Royal remains small enough for the standings to change quickly.
Day 1 verdict: Strong, early leaders with momentum
Kiambu Golf Club — The comeback of the day
No team experienced a more dramatic turnaround on Friday.
Kiambu scored zero points in the morning 4BBB.
Then they produced the most emphatic response of the day.
Kiambu won all five Foursomes matches, taking the maximum available points from their afternoon programme. Among the results were a 3/2 win by Jemile Gacheru and John Kamais, a 1-up victory by Michael Karanga and Steve Kiaro, and a 6/5 win by Simon Maina and Michael Ngene.
That leaves Kiambu only 6.5 points behind Golf Park despite drawing a blank in the morning.
Kiambu have transformed what looked like a disastrous day into a genuine promotion opportunity. Their biggest challenge is avoiding another 4BBB collapse.
Day 1 verdict: Remarkable recovery with promotion race wide open.
Royal Nairobi Golf Club — The day's biggest swing
Royal's Friday was a study in contrasts.
They were the morning leaders in the Plaque, collecting 17.5 points in 4BBB.
Then came the collapse.
Royal managed only three points in Foursomes.
The contrast is striking given their 2025 Bowl-winning campaign, when Royal produced a remarkably consistent sequence of 15, 16, 15, 20 and 40.5 points.
Friday was anything but consistent.
Royal remain only 10 points behind Golf Park, so the division is far from lost. But Saturday must look more like their morning performance and much less like their afternoon.
Day 1 verdict: Huge missed opportunity — but still in contention.
BOWL DIVISION
Windsor Golf & Country Club — The promotion campaign is underway
Windsor have perhaps made the clearest statement among the promoted clubs.
After winning the 2025 Mug with 102.5 points, Windsor arrived in the Bowl with a strong reputation — and Friday reinforced it.
They swept their morning 4BBB matches for 20 points and added 18 in Foursomes.
Their Foursomes performance included a 4/3 win by Alex Mwangi and Kayden Wissanji, a 1-up victory by Daniel Mwangi and Kanana Muthomi, and a 3/1 win by Joshua Maina and Amar Shah.
Windsor lead Limuru by 15 points.
This is precisely the kind of start expected from a team that won its division last year. Windsor have immediately established themselves as the team to beat.
Day 1 verdict: Outstanding , promotion favourites.
Limuru Country Club — Strong afternoon saves a difficult morning
Limuru's morning was poor, with only five points.
Their response in Foursomes was excellent.
They collected 18 points, including wins by Felix Dusabe and Jacque Biringyo and John Kagiri and Francis Kimani.The afternoon performance keeps Limuru in contention, but the 15-point gap to Windsor means they cannot afford another slow start.
The quality is clearly there. The issue is consistency.
Day 1 verdict: Competitive but chasing
Karen Country Club — An afternoon to forget
Karen endured the most difficult day in the Bowl.
They managed only five points in 4BBB and failed to score in Foursomes.That leaves them 18 points behind Limuru and 33 behind Windsor.The result is particularly damaging because Karen have previously demonstrated that they can be competitive in Foursomes.Karen need an immediate response on Saturday. Another poor session could turn a promotion challenge into a battle simply to stay competitive.
Day 1 verdict: Major trouble with immediate response required.
MUG DIVISION
Ruiru Sports Club — The early promotion favourite
Ruiru have made the start they needed.They swept their morning 4BBB programme to collect 20 points, then added 12 in Foursomes.The morning was particularly impressive. Their pairings included a 4/3 victory by Bernard Omondi and John Numi and a 5/4 win by John Timbe and Eliakim Maina.Ruiru now lead Eldoret by eight points.
Having finished second in the Mug last year, Ruiru have made their promotion ambitions clear. The challenge now is maintaining the momentum.
Day 1 verdict: Strong and early promotion favourites.
Eldoret Club — Staying within touching distance
Eldoret have kept themselves firmly in the contest.
They improved from 10 points in 4BBB to 14 in Foursomes.Their afternoon contained encouraging results, including a 5/4 Foursomes win by Ken Serem and Elly Barno against Ruiru and a 3/2 win by Joseph Watunu and Frank Bukwo.
Eight points is a manageable deficit. Eldoret's biggest opportunity is to pressure Ruiru early on Saturday.

Kericho Club — Difficult baptism, encouraging response
Kericho's first Patron's Cup day was always going to be about adapting to the competition.The new entrants started with zero points in 4BBB, but responded with 10 in Foursomes.The afternoon produced their first notable statement: Dismus Indiza and Kiplagat Maiyo defeated Eldoret's third pair 4/3.Kericho also pushed Ruiru in the second Foursomes contest, which ended all square.
Kericho have ground to recover, but the afternoon demonstrated that they can compete. Their challenge now is to turn competitiveness into points.

Muthaiga have laid down the marker
The defending champions have combined a perfect morning with a dominant afternoon and already created breathing room in the Trophy.
Sigona have emerged as the early promotion favourite
Their 22.5-point Foursomes haul was one of the day's standout performances.
The Plaque is the division to watch Golf Park lead, but Kiambu's extraordinary recovery and Royal's dramatic swing mean all three remain within reach.
Windsor look determined to keep climbing
Their 38-point opening is a powerful indication that their promotion from the Mug may be followed by another move up the ladder.
Ruiru have taken the initiative
The Mug leaders have given themselves an early advantage, but Eldoret remain close enough to make the promotion race interesting.
Kericho have survived their baptism
The newcomers' scoreless morning was a setback, but their afternoon response showed enough to suggest they will not simply make up the numbers.
SATURDAY: THE DAY THAT COULD CHANGE EVERYTHING
The Patron's Cup promotion-and-relegation format means Friday's leaders cannot afford to become complacent.In the Trophy, Muthaiga have the advantage, but Vet Lab need to produce a major response if the title race is to remain competitive.In the Shield, Sigona have established control, while Thika remain close enough to challenge. Nyali need a significant turnaround.In the Plaque, the battle is wide open. Golf Park have the lead, Kiambu have momentum and Royal have the ability to produce a big response.In the Bowl, Windsor have created the largest lead of the divisions outside the Trophy.
